History
Woodlawn School was founded in 2002, on a historic piece of property (
Wood Lawn ) in the burgeoning Lake Norman area. The historic planter's home was originally built in 1836 and is listed on theNational Register of Historic Places .In its short history, Woodlawn has already distinguished itself both academically and in extracurricular activities. Each year, a large percentage of its 7th grade class qualify for the Duke University TIP (
Talent Identification Program ), a program that seeks to recognize the top 5% of 7th grade students across the southeastern United States. In athletics, Woodlawn is a member of the PAC-8 Middle School Athletic Conference, and its teams have won titles in boys cross country (2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006) and girls cross country (2005 and 2006). Woodlawn also offers other interscholastic middle/high school sports, including soccer, boys basketball, girls basketball, golf, tennis, and cheerleading/drum corps. At Woodlawn, the classes are very integrated. The topic (for example, Russia) is spread from art all the way to social studies and science. Community service is also a big part of life at Woodlawn. The sixth grade focuses on helping animals, for example, by working with the Humane Society. Seventh graders investigate issues with poverty. They have gone to Urban Ministries and Crisis Assistance Ministry in Charlotte. They also knit scarves to donate to impovershed people through Urban Ministries.
Many fieldtrips are taken, whether it is third graders going to see "March of the Penguins" or the sixth grade going to Barrier Island to study sea turtles.
