As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 179,445 and the density of 2,110 persons per km². The total area is 84.98 km². It is the last station on the Semboku Kousoku monorail line（泉北高速鉄道）at Izumi Chuo Station（和泉中央駅）.

The city was founded on September 1, 1956.

It is known for its cabbage and sweet Vidalia-like onions.

It is a Sister City of Bloomington, Minnesota.
