Born Thomas Albert Roberts, he grew up in
Towson, Maryland and attendedCalvert Hall , a Catholic high school in nearbyBaltimore . In 1994, he graduated fromWestern Maryland College (nowMcDaniel College ) with a major in Communication and a minor in Journalism.Early career
After college, Roberts got his first job reporting for a small cable station in
Westminster, Maryland . He then moved to San Diego, California and worked as writer/field producer for NBC affiliateKNSD before relocating to Nebraska, where he worked as a general assignment reporter with ABC affiliateKLKN-TV inLincoln, Nebraska .He went on to become a nightly news anchor and investigative reporter for FOX affiliate
WFTX-TV inFort Myers, Florida and later for NBC affiliateWAVY-TV in Portsmouth-Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Virginia. At WAVY-TV, he co-anchored an afternoon newscast and was also the station's investigative/consumer correspondent.CNN
Roberts joined
CNN in December 2001 and was based in Atlanta. Roberts was a weekend overnight anchor onHeadline News and provided Prime NewsBreaks. Previously at Headline News, Roberts co-anchored withJudy Fortin ,Sophia Choi and Kathleen Kennedy. He co-anchored the network's coverage of the shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003 and its ongoing Iraq war coverage. In 2005, after years of silence, Roberts came forward to testify against Jerome F. Toohey Jr., a former priest who had abused him when he was a student at
Calvert Hall College High School . Fr. Toohey pled guilty to the sexual abuse charges and received a five year jail sentence with all but 18 months suspended in February 2006.
