Pulteney Grammar School is an independent, Anglican, co-educational, day school, located on South Terrace in Adelaide, South Australia.

History

It was founded as a boys' school on Monday, 29 May 1847, and is one of the oldest schools in South Australia. Pulteney became fully coeducational from the beginning of 1999 (having enrolled girls at Reception to Year 2 from 1998). Pulteney has been criticised recently for 'positive discrimination' against boys in an attempt to adjust the gender imbalance. Pulteney separated into sub-schools in 2001, and was followed by many other Anglican Private schools across Australia.

In September 1996, the school came into the media spotlight after allegations of sexual abuse of a teenage student by a music teacher.

In 2006, the school demolished the current Gymnasium, and over the course of two years erected a new, expanded gym and expanded the Preparatory yard-space. At the beginning of 2008, the majority of the Schrader Library was converted intocomputer laboratories.

In 2007, Pulteney celebrated it's 160th anniversary.

School Information

As of 2006, the school has more than 800 students enrolled and over 200 teaching and non-teaching staff. Pulteney is composed of four sub-schools located on the same campus. The 'Kurrajong' and the ELC (Early Learning Centre) for students up to year 2, Prep School for years 3-6, Middle School for years 7-9 and "one ninety" (Senior School) for the final years 10-12.

Pulteney in 2001 changed the school demographic and abolished its school prefects replacing it by a more American system consisting of voted representatives, lead by a President and a Vice President known as the Pulteney Grammar School Forum. The members of the Forum and now also the captains of each school house, have white blazers instead of blue as a sign of leadership.
