nihongo|Kashiwa|柏市|Kashiwa-shi is a city located in Chiba, Japan. As of May 1, 2005, the city has an estimated population of 382,957. The total area is 114.90 km².

The city was founded on September 1, 1954, as a merger of townships in the area around the train station and current city center. The centre of the city is dominated by the large multi-story station and the neighbouring Takashimaya department store. The station is a stop on both the main JR Jōban line out of Ueno station, and the Tōbu-Noda line. Kashiwa is home to a professional football team, Kashiwa Reysol.

Through the Kashiwa International Relations Association, the city of Kashiwa maintains relationships with cities in China, Guam, and the continental United States. Since 1973, Kashiwa has been the sister city of the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance, California.

History

Kashiwa is said to born from "kashiba" wharf in old Japanese.

In Edo period, there were ranches for military horses of Tokugawa shogunate in the city. A few banks of the ranch are left.
