Association for Liberal Thinking

Association for Liberal Thinking

The Association for Liberal Thinking ("Liberal Düşünce Topluluğu" in Turkish) is a Turkish political think-thank that aims to encourage the growth and development of liberal democracy in the country without being directly linked to any one political party.

History

The group was informally founded on 26 December 1992, gaining official status as an association under Turkish law on 1 April 1994. Three years after its informal formation the Association started to publish what it recognizes as its flagship publication, the journal titled "Liberal Düşünce" (Liberal Thought).

The organisation views itself as an intellectual group that aims to spark political debates in Turkish society and in doing so seeks to encourage the full development of a democratic political culture

Organisation

The current president of the association is Atilla Yayla, a well-known academic.

The association is based in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey.

It has four working groups called "research centers": "Hukuk ve Ekonomi Araştırma Merkezi" (Law and Economics Research Center), "Ekonomik Özgürlük Merkezi" (Economic Freedom Center), "Çevre Çalışmaları Merkezi" (Environmental Studies Center) and "Akademik Danışmanlık Merkezi" (Academic Guidance Center).

Activities

The association publishes reports, books and journals ("Liberal Düşünce" and "Piyasa", both published quarterly), hosts seminars and runs educational programs. It supports researches carrying out studies that serve its activities. It also organizes essay contest aimed primarily at university students for encouraging study and dissemination of liberal thought. For example the essay contest for 2008 was on the meaning of reading Frederic Bastiat's "Law".

Recent projects carried out by the organisation have included 'Interreligious Affairs: Search for A Peaceful Coexistence in a Secular and Democratic System', a 2004 project aimed at encouraging diversity which was sponsored by the European Commission.

The organisation is associated with "Liberte Yayınları" (Liberte Publications) that publishes its journals and books by its members.
