* 1854 – The Brooklyn City Railroad, the oldest streetcar line in Brooklyn, New York, opens for passenger service.
* 1869 – Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad subsidiary Kansas City and Cameron Railroad opens the Hannibal Bridge, the first railroad bridge across the Missouri River, connecting its namesake cities.
* 1874 – The first revenue trains on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad operate between Denver and Morrison, Colorado.
* 1884 – The first Dow Jones average, the predecessor of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, is published; of the eleven companies included in the average, nine of them are American railroads. * 1983 – Chicago and North Western Railway holds official groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction of the line into Wyoming's Powder River Basin.
