19th century
* 1814 – George Stephenson puts his first steam locomotive in service, for a coal mine.
* 1832 – A cable snaps on an incline of the Granite Railway causing one of the first rail transport related fatalities in the United States.
20th century
* 1901 – The Hull Electric Railway officially begins regular service over the Interprovincial Bridge between Ottawa and Aylmer.
* 1911 – Canadian Northern Railway (CNOR) purchases the right-of-way and assets of the defunct Carillon and Grenville Railway, the last broad gauge railroad (at 5 ft 6 in) in North America, to become part of CNOR's Montreal-Ottawa mainline.
* 1953 – The New York City Subway begins using tokens for passenger fares.
* 1958 – Pacific Great Eastern Railway completes construction of the line to Fort St. John, British Columbia.
* 1967 – Construction begins in San Francisco, California, on the Market Street Subway.
* 1980 – Two trains collide on a single track between Groningen and Roodeschool, near Winsum, The Netherlands, resulting in 9 deaths and 21 injured.
* 1987 – Indian Railways installs its first solid state interlocking at Srirangam, India.
* 1995 – A bombing in Paris RER B station "Saint-Michel Notre-Dame" kills 8 and injures more than 200. The bombing was attributed to the Algerian Armed Islamic Group.
21st century
* 2004 – Thieves steal two brass handles and four copper pipes from the "Fairy Queen" steam locomotive in New Delhi, India.
