* 1877 – Railroad workers go on strike in Martinsburg, West Virginia, derail and loot a train; United States President Rutherford B. Hayes calls in Federal troops to break the strike.
20th century
* 1916 – Much of the Southern Railway's mainline in North and South Carolina is damaged or destroyed by flooding.
* 1939 – The world's first diesel-powered rack locomotive enters service on the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway.
* 1945 – Canadian National Railway opens its ore dock at Port Arthur, Ontario.
* 1983 – The route of Amtrak's "California Zephyr" is shifted off the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.
* 1991 – Indian Railways inaugurates the "Lifeline Express" ("Jeevan Rekha") hospital train.
* 1999 – Indian Railways' "Grand Trunk Express" on its way to Delhi collides with derailed freight cars near Mathura, India; 17 people die and 200 more are injured in the accident.
