Battle of Auburn I

Battle of Auburn I

The First Battle of Auburn was fought on October 13, 1863, between Union infantry and Confederate cavalry forces in the American Civil War. The Confederates, led by Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, became entangled in a battle with a Union force (III Corps) led by Maj. Gen. William H. French near Warrenton. A portion of the Confederate forces withdrew towards Warrenton; Stuart hid two brigades (about 2,000 men) further south all night and escaped from near encirclement in the morning.
