village andcivil parish in theMid Sussex district ofWest Sussex ,England . It is located 8 kilometres (5 miles) to the west ofBurgess Hill . The civil parish covers an area of 783.72ha. In the 2001 census 271 people lived in 100 households, of whom 139 were economically active.The name 'Twineham' is of Saxon origin, meaning 'the homestead between the streams'. The village centre has no pub, post office or shop. There is only the church and the school.
The eastern
River Adur meets another major stream at Twineham. The river then continues to the west ofHenfield , where it meets the western Adur to reach the sea atShoreham-by-Sea .History
In 1856, Twineham had a lot more services than nowadays, it had a post office, general shop, butchers, dairy, shoemenders, blacksmith and wheelwright. None of these services are now there.
In 1911, the viilage started to get its piped water supply from the Burgess Hill Water Company. In 1928, the roads were surfaced, and electricity came to the village in 1936. The village of Twineham has never had its own pub, though there are two pubs in the parish of Twineham.
Religion
The church of St Peter is early tudor, built with mellow red brick and a Horsham stone roof. There are covered pews, a gallery under the tower, which has a peal of five bells, and a jacobean pulpit. The churchyard contains a
Quaker burial ground (used between 1694 and 1732) marked by four stone corner posts.Education
Twineham Church of England School is adjacent to the Church and was opened in 1864. Originally a
tithe barn , the building has various additions, the latest in 1997. According to the Ofsted Report of May 2006, the school had 73 pupils on roll coming from the village of Twineham itself and from the surrounding area. Noted was a higher than average proportion of pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities.Politics
Twineham is in the constituency of Arundel and South Downs. It is a farily new constituency created in 1997, and has had only two MP's
Howard Flight (Conservative, 1997-2005) AndNick Herbert (Conservative) received 49.8% of votes in the 2005 general elections.Nick Herbert is the current MP for the area.Cheese
One of Twineham's most surprising and best kept secrets is the award winning cheese made at Twineham Grange Farm. It is called Twineham Grange Farmers’ Hand Cheese and they have been making it there for 15 years. It is similar to
Parmesan , made with an Italian recipe but with British milk. Twineham Grange Farm has been forbidden to use the term Parmesan which can be used only to describe Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese which is made in Italy to a specific and strict standard of quality with traditional methods and local ingredients of the region Emilia-Romagna.Since April 2007, a new cheese called Sussex Charmer, is being produced in Twineham. The cheese is a cross between a
parmesan and acheddar . The milk comes also from Sussex, from a dairy farm inRudgwick .Sussex Charmer won Best New Dairy Product 2008 at the Nantwich International Cheese Awardsport
Twineham & Wineham Cricket Club, founded in 1893, still play at the village's Recreation Ground. The Club plays friendly Sunday matches both home and away against local village opposition between the end of April and the end of September.
