Annan railway station serves the town of Annan in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is located on the Glasgow South Western Line 28 km (17½ miles) north west of Carlisle and is managed by First ScotRail who provide all passenger train services.

Until the early 1980s, the goods yard at Annan station was still in regular use. The station was also used for the dispatch of fresh fish to London until the mid to late 1980s.

Shortly after leaving Annan station on a westbound service to Dumfries, the line crosses a viaduct over the River Annan and adjoining flood plains. Also just to the West of Annan is a disused junction and dismantled line heading south to the Cochran's Boiler plant at Newbie. [cite web | url = http://www.bibcochran.com | title = BIB Cochran ]

History

Opened by the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway, then run by the Glasgow and South Western Railway , it became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to the Scottish Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.

When Sectorisation was introduced in the 1980's, the station was served by ScotRail until the Privatisation of British Railways.

At one point in its history, Annan was served by two railway stations (1870-1931). Annan Shawhill station was on the long-disused Solway Junction Railway which ran from Kirtlebridge on the current West Coast Main Line through the west side of Annan, across the Solway Firth and on to Maryport in Cumbria.

Services

There is generally a two-hourly service southbound to Carlisle and northbound to Dumfries and Kilmarnock.

On Sundays four trains a day head southbound to Carlisle and northbound to Dumfries.
