- "Go Wash Your Mouth, I Don't Know Where It's Been", is based on the movie American Beauty.
- "The Lisbon Girls, Oh the Lisbon Girls", is a reference to the novel and film The Virgin Suicides.
- Sarah Goldfarb is the name of the mother in Requiem for a Dream.
- "The 20th Century Was Entirely Mine" is a reference to The Devil's Advocate and Titanic. The title being a line from Al Pacino's character, Satan, who loves vanity, and the content of the song is about the vain nature of the ship.
- "Given to Dreams" is supposedly about The General's Daughter, a movie starring John Travolta.
- The band rarely plays any songs from Odd How People Shake live, and the band states on its official website that they flat out refuse to play the song, "On the Bright Side, She Could Choke." However, they did play an acoustic version of this song in Houston, TX, which can be viewed on YouTube. The band played "On the Brightside..." in its original form for the first time since 2003 at a hometown show on September 5, 2008.
