Alpena High School is a public high school for students in grades 9-12 located in the city of Alpena, Michigan. For the 2005-06 school year AHS reported an enrollment of exactly 1,600 students. [http://www.mhsaa.com/resources/0506enroll.rtf] The current school building opened in 1967. There was an addition in 1998-99 where a new wing ("G House") was added, among other renovations. AHS is the only high school serving the Alpena Public Schools district.

Extracurricular

The school newspaper, "The Wildcat", is a member of the High School National Ad Network. The fate of the paper is unknown beyond the 06-07 school year, due to budget issues.

Alpena High had its own daily TV news program, "AHS News" or "WAHS" until the end of the 06-07 school yeah. AHS News was filmed during broadcasting class in the mornings. Prior the 2006-07 school year it was filmed at WBKB-TV, the only local TV station. Depending on a student's lunch period, it was shown either before or after lunch, along with Channel One News (which still airs there). Also airing on WBKB-TV are the Knowledge Bowl competitions of Alpena High and surrounding schools. As of this '07 season, the Alpena team record concluded at 3-2.

There is also the AHS Leadership class, they do a lot of the school behind the scenes work.Including Prom and Homecoming, as well most of the random jobs that need to get done.

Athletics

The "Wildcats" compete in the Big North Conference with Cadillac, Gaylord, Petoskey, Traverse City Central, and Traverse City West High Schools in most sports. Swimming is an exception, and the Wildcats are part of the Independent Swim Conference. School colors are forest green and white. The assistant principal Tom Atkinson is the Athletic Director. Its enrollment of 1,600 places it in the Michigan High School Athletic Association's highest school classification, Class A.
