S P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is one of the premier B-Schools in India, founded by Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in 1981. SPJIMR is located in the Andheri suburb of Mumbai. Since 1994-95, it has been ranked consistently among the top-10 B-schools of India. The institute also believes itself to be among the top-10 B-schools of South Asia.

SPJIMR offers a two year PGDM and a one year PGPM program, both equivalent to an MBA degree. Other programs include PGDSM-MIT (in association with Virginia Tech), Family Managed Business (FMB) and an Executive Management Program (EMP - similar to EMBA). The institute also offers various short term courses for specialized needs.

History

Inaugurated in 1981 by the then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, SPJIMR had modest beginnings as a small extension of the Bhavan's campus (of Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan). The institute was among the only three business schools of India at that time. The institute was disaffiliated from the then Bombay University, to provide it with more freedom in terms of curriculum decision making, pedagogic innovations and program pioneering.

Throughout its history, the institute has an enviable track record of recognizing the needs of the society, especially the under managed sectors, responding with quick and appropriate solutions. The institute has kept influencing practice and promoting value base growth as its guiding philosophy.

The institute has grown in stature and today, it boasts of a campus in the heart of Mumbai (with accommodation quarters for its students), and also two international campuses in Dubai and Singapore.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) (2 year full time)

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), formerly known as Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM), is a two-year, full time, residential programme. The programme offers specializations in finance, operations, marketing and information management, and is ranked among the top ten in the country. The specializations are chosen at the time of admission.

The aim of this programme is to develop appropriate skills in the candidates and the right attitude to enable them to manage modern enterprises. As the candidates have none or relatively few years of industry experience, the programme emphasizes on the need to develop an ability to translate theory into practice.

The programme considers CAT, XAT and GMAT scores for admission, but unlike some other institutions, it places more emphasis on academic performance, versatility in extra-curricular activities and relevant work experience (if any).

Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) (1 year full time)

The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), formerly known as Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), is a one-year, full time residential programme. The program offers specializations in operations and information management, and is ranked among the top three of its kind. The specializations are chosen at the time of admission.

The mission of the programme is to create and nurture value-based future leaders taking on higher management roles in transforming organizations. The programme admits working professionals from various domains and leading industries, to enable knowledge sharing and peer learning. The unique aspect of the programme is its focus on the specific role and domain of interest to the participant. Still, it also aims at producing Versatilists as againsts Generalists and Specialists.

The programme considers CAT, XAT and GMAT scores for admission, but unlike some other institutions, it places more emphasis on academic performance, versatility in extra-curricular activities and a minimum work experience of 5 years.

Executive Management Programme (EMP)

The Executive Management Programme (EMP) is a non-residential programme, for working professionals, similar to an EMBA, with 60 full day classes on campus, spread over a period of 21 months and various contact sessions.

The aim of this program is to develop a reservoir of versatile executives with functional knowledge and a general management perspective, to meet the emerging business challenges.

Family Managed Business (FMB)

The Family Managed Business (FMB) programme is designed for candidates to lead their family businesses, helping them meet unique challenges associated with operating and sustaining a successful family enterprise.

The duration of the program is 2 years and includes a foreign visit. The participants spent a week at the institute to learn and the remaining three weeks of the month at their workplace, to apply the learning. The duration of Owner Manager Programme is only twelve months.

The programme considers graduate candidates with a significant stake in a family business. Selection requires sponsorship from the business, a test and a personal interview.

Center for DOCC

The Centre for Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) was established in the year 2001 with a view to mould management education in tune with the Indian context. DOCC is a unique program developed to hone management skills of future managers in social sectors and to create awareness about the need to contribute to the society. At the same time DOCC aims to enhance the managerial aspects of the social sector.

DOCC works closely with NGOs and corporates by undertaking various consultancy and research assignments. It also works as a medium between the Corporate and NGOs and strives to bring them together in contributing to the society.

The Centre for DOCC has its origins in SPJIMR's research project for ASSOCHAM, which addressed the issue of socio-economic development of rural India. The PGDM programme is accredited by AICTE. Also, National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has awarded "A" grade accreditation. AIU has recognized PGDM to be equivalent of a degree in MBA.

SPJIMR is one of the five institutions selected by Wadhwani Foundation, from the 189 Indian Institutions, to become the member of National Entrepreneurship Network along with IIM (A), IIT (Mumbai), BITS (Pilani) and IBAB (Bangalore). Aspen Institute, US has invited SPJIMR, the only one from Asia, along with other 12 global institutions to develop pedagogy for Teaching Improvement Program (TIP) integrating CSR in the Management curriculum.
