Madhav Institute of Technology and Science, Gwalior (formerly Madhav Engineering College, Gwalior), commonly known as MITS-Gwalior or MITS-G, is a college of engineering in Gwalior, India.

History

Madhav Institute of Technology and Science was established in 1957 by His Highness Late Sir Jiwaji Rao Scindia, Maharaja, Erstwhile state of Gwalior. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India on 20 October, 1956 and the building was inaugurated on 11 December, 1964 by Late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India.

The institute started with B.E. courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in applied Sciences were introduced in 1967. The B.E. in Electronics Engineering was started in 1981. An undergraduate course in Architecture Architecture was introduced in 1984. The institute started a postgraduate course in Computer Application (M.C.A.) in 1986.

The institute offered the postgraduate Course in Civil Engineering with specialization in Construction Technology and Management in 1987. Postgraduation in Electronics and Electrical Engineering was started in 1995.

The B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering were offered in 1994 and 1995 respectively. Information Technology was started in 2000. A postgraduate course in Production Technology in Mechanical Engineering department and in Microwave in Electronics and CSE department are the latest additions.

The institute offers Ph.D. programmes in engineering and science.

The president of the governing body is Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is also a Member of Parliament.

Campus

MITS Gwalior is located on RACE COURSE Road, Gwalior. The campus of 47 acres (190,000 m2) is surrounded by educational institutions such as the Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education and the Agriculture University.

The campus resembles a planned city with gardens, lawns and wide roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply.

The MITS campus is divided into two zones:

  • The student and faculty residential zone is divided into two sectors — one for men's hostels and another for women's hostels.
  • The academic zone comprises department offices, lecture theaters, libraries and workshops.

There are five hostels (three for men and two for women). The male hostels are named Block 1, Block 2, and Block 3. The female hostela are named Block 4 and Block 5. Each male hostel has a capacity of 112 students though some hostels can house 200 students. The women's hostels have a much smaller capacity.

Each hostel has a mess, a table tennis room, a common room where residents can watch television and read magazine and newspapers and a visiting room where residents can receive their guests.

The Student Activity Center is a part of the academic zone and is mainly intended for extra-curricular activities. The SAC has a gymnasium, three squash courts, a music room, two tennis courts, a fibreglass basketball court, cricket ground and a volleyball court.

MITS Gwalior has ten departments. Together they offer hundreds of courses every semester.[1]

Departments

MITS Gwalior has ten departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering stream or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. The HoD heads the department for a period of two years after which a new head is appointed. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Electronics, Computer Science and IT, offer three or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program.

Academic programmes

MITS Gwalior's undergraduate program includes the Bachelor of Engineering program. It offers postgraduate level programs like Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Master of Science (Research). It offers a Ph.D. program. The admission criteria for all these programs is different at the entry level.

Undergraduate programmes

MITS Gwalior offers a Bachelor of Engineering in eight areas, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Bio-technology Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Admissions are through the entrance examinations of AIEEE and MP-PET which are organized by CBSE and VYAPM respectively.

Postgraduate programs

The institute offers postgraduate level programs in each department of engineering There are a number of inter-disciplinary programs available. The admission criteria for the post graduation programs vary from one program to other. At postgraduate level, the admissions are on the basis of GATE. Admissions to the Master of Computer Applications course is done on the basis of MP-MCA examination
