international airport in Cairns,Queensland ,Australia . It is operated by theCairns Port Authority and is the sixth busiest airport in Australia. The airport is located km to mi|num=7|abbr=no|spell=Commonwealth|precision=0|wiki=yes north of the Cairnscentral business district in the suburb of Aeroglen. The airport lies between Mount Whitfield to the west and Trinity Bay to the east.The airport serves international, domestic and
general aviation flights including a number ofhelicopter operators. Flights are operated to major Australian cities and tourist destinations, regional communities inFar North Queensland , and a number of international destinations in theAsia-Pacific region with connections to the rest of the world. The airport formed the main base forAustralian Airlines prior to its ceasing of operations in June 2006 (the airport remains a major port for parent companyQantas ). It is also a base for theRoyal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and thesearch and rescue helicopters of theState Emergency Service .Operations

The domestic and international terminals are located on the eastern side on reclaimed
mangrove swamp . The terminals are in two separate buildings m to ft|num=200|abbr=no|spell=Commonwealth|precision=0|wiki=yes from one another. Theair traffic control tower is also located in this area. The general aviation area is on the western side of the airport adjacent to theCaptain Cook Highway .The airport’s main north-south
runway is m to ft|3196|abbr=yes|precision=0 long. A smaller m to ft|925|abbr=yes|precision=0 runway, used for general aviation, lies to the east; its final approach crosses the main runway. The final approach to the main south-facing runway is located directly overhead Cairns' northern beach suburbs. The flight path to the south is located directly over the CairnsEsplanade .The airport is located approximately 6 kilometres north from Cairns Central Shopping Centre and is situated on Airport Way off Sheridan Street (
Captain Cook Highway ). Rental Cars are located at the domestic terminal in the QantasLink arrival lounge, while bus shuttles to Cairns, and Port Douglas depart hourly. Taxis are also available 24 hours a day and cost around $15 to the city centre.Airlines and destinations

As at February 2008 a wide range of aircraft operate in and out of Cairns International Airport. Most notably are Jetstar's Airbus A320s, A321s and A330s;
Qantas ' B737s and B767s;Cathay Pacific 's A330s;Virgin Blue B737s andAir New Zealand 's A320s; as well as a large array of smaller aircraft such asAir Niugini 's Fokker 100 andAirlines PNG 's dash 8. During peak periods, Qantas operates Boeing 747-400's on theBrisbane toTokyo route via Cairns.References
