Maltby Main Football Club is an English football club based in Maltby, South Yorkshire. The club participates in the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division.

History

The club was originally formed in 1916 as Maltby Main F.C., named after the local colliery.[2] They joined the Yorkshire League Division Two in 1949, and finished in 16th place out of 20 in their first season, 1949–50.[3] The club spent six seasons in this division, with their last being 1954–55, when they finished in bottom place.[3] The club eventually disbanded in 1965.[2]

Maltby Miners Welfare was formed in 1970 and played in the Sheffield Senior League until the 1973–74 season, joining the Yorkshire League Division Three, which they won promotion from after finishing as runner-up.[2][4] They won a second promotion the following season after a fourth place finish in Division Two, but were instantly relegated back after one season in Division One.[4] After several seasons of mid-table finishes, they again won promotion to Division One in the 1979–80 season, and were again relegated.[4] They spent one more season in the Yorkshire League before being placed in the Northern Counties East Football League Division One (South) following the merger of the Yorkshire League and the Midland League.[2][4]

Their first season saw a sixth place finish out of 14, and in 1983–84 they faced a two point deduction, which saw them again finish in sixth place.[4] They were placed in Division One Central on league re-organisation in 1984–85 and the following season saw them placed in Division Two, as the league was again re-organised.[4] This season saw them win promotion to Division One after finishing 6th out of 16.[4] They spent four seasons in Division One until being promoted to the Premier Division in 1989–90 after the installation of new floodlights.[2][4] This was the first season in charge of former New Zealand international Colin Walker, who took the team into fourth place out of 20 in 1992–93, when they also won the Northern Counties East President Cup.[2]

The 1999–96 season saw Maltby reach their lowest ever position in the Premier Division, when they finished 19th out of 20.[4] In mid-1996, they split from the Miners Welfare and decided to revert the club name to Maltby Main.[2] They topped the Premier Division table for a large portion of the 1997–98 season, until eventually finishing in 6th place.[2] Manager Dave McCarthy left the club and former Football League player Steve Fleetwood took over as manager.[2] The following season saw the club have two points deducted, meaning they finished with 28, and avoiding relegation only on goal difference.[2][3] Despite finishing the 1999–2000 season in mid-table, the club were relegated to Division One as they were not able to afford hardstanding around the ground's pitch.[2][3]
