Thomas Edison State College is a public institution of higher education located in Trenton, New Jersey. The college offers 12 degrees at the undergraduate level (six Associate and six Baccalaureate) and four master's degrees.

The College is home to The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy, which provides public policy analysis and other assistance to government, community groups and the private sector. The New Jersey State Library is an affiliate of the College.

Thomas Edison State College was named in honor of Thomas Alva Edison, a New Jersey resident.

Campus

The campus located in Trenton is adjacent to New Jersey's State House complex and the State House historic district. The campus consists of five main facilities: the Kelsey Building; the Townhouse Complex; the Academic Center; Kuser Mansion (home to The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy); and the Canal Banks Building.

Academics

One of New Jersey's 12 senior public institutions of higher education, Thomas Edison State College is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1977. Its nursing programs are accreditated by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission since 1990. The College offers 16 associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees in more than 100 areas of study to its more than 13,100 students in every state in the United States and more than 70 countries around the world. Students earn degrees through a wide variety of rigorous and high-quality academic methods that can be customized to meet their individual needs. Identified by "Forbes" magazine as one of the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation in the use of technology to create learning opportunities for adults, Thomas Edison State College is a national leader in the assessment of adult learning and a pioneer in the use of educational technologies.

Legitimacy

Thomas Edison State College is sometimes mistaken for a diploma mill due to its distance-learning programs and its flexible and non-traditional curriculum requirements for working adults. But consumer advocates make an exception for Thomas Edison: "This publicly-funded distance learning university makes it possible for adult learners, in theory, to earn Associate or Bachelor degrees entirely through career portfolios, military and corporate training, and challenge exams."
