Thomas Edison State College is sometimes mistaken for a diploma mill due to its distance-learning programs and its flexible and non-traditional curriculum requirements for working adults. But consumer advocates make an exception for Thomas Edison: "This publicly-funded distance learning university makes it possible for adult learners, in theory, to earn Associate or Bachelor degrees entirely through career portfolios, military and corporate training, and challenge exams." [Vicky Phillips, " [ Consumer Alert: Top 10 Signs Online Diploma Mills & Degree Mills] ,"] Unlike almost all diploma mills, Thomas Edison is a legitimate state university accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
