Newcastle-upon-Tyne Electric Supply Company

Newcastle-upon-Tyne Electric Supply Company

The Newcastle-upon-Tyne Electric Supply Company was founded in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in 1889 by the industrialist John Theodore Merz (1840-1922). It built a series of coal-fired power stations in the Tyneside area, initially to provide power for the newly electrified railways. It later became the North Eastern Electric Supply Co (NESCo), which in turn merged into the North Eastern Electricity Board (NEEB) on the nationalisation of the industry in 1948.
