Pallavaram (Tamil: பல்லாவரம்) is a suburban town within the city of Chennai and a municipality in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located near Tambaram, a hub for suburban trains as well as trains bound south.

History

Pallavaram was originally called Pallavapuram and has been in existence since the times of the Pallava king Mahendravarman I who built magnificent temples here. A cave shrine excavated on the Pallavaram Hills is one of the oldest temples in Chennai and predates Mamallapuram. However, the British archaeologist, Robert Bruce Foote had discovered artifacts and stone implements belonging to the Old Stone and Iron Age here.

Its surrounding areas include Pammal, Anakaputhur, Pozhichalur, Nagalkeni etc.Pallavaram is also a roadways hub, as all buses coming to Chennai from the south have to pass through this place. It is dangerously crowded during peak hours.

Pallavaram in recent times was destroyed by encroachers - Lakes and Ponds where the only source of water. With a 200-foot road destroyed the Pallavaram Big Lake, is now in High Court to get it restored. The SEZ is coming up in the middle of the lake by "rich dogs" with the "cooperation" of local politition and local encroachers both Ruling and opponent parties of Pallavaram Municipalities with the help from Tambaram Tasildar office, Pallavaram Commissioner office of Pallavaram Municipality. The Vels college is also encroached by the rich men. It is constructed right in the middle of the lake. Pallavaram Lake is 2nd to Chembarambakkam Lake. The mindless fellows - so called officers might have reclassified the lake area as residential area, just for the sake of few "bones that dogs grabs". Hence talking of law and order and rules of law is really funny in India. One who has money and political power can do anything in India....!!!!When there is any flood situation the rich are normally not affected because they fly somewhere else and comeback when the flood dries. The poor are thrown out with a few bags of rice and the problem is solved temporarely....!!!

Even when the DMK has taken more steps to restore Lakes and ponds across TN -D.Pandiyan of Commununist Party of India has objected to removing the encroachment and even went to the extent of having a quarrel with the govt Officials that came to remove the encroachment in Ambattur. The cunningness of D.Pandiyan with this approach is to keep the poor - poorer and rich the richer.

How this is done is simple....

If the CPI object the removal of encroachment, then there wont be any water stored during rainy season and there wont be any rain water harvesting and thus by creating a drought situation during summer season. So during summer season when people are struggling for drinking water the CPI and others will spring into action and announce different kind of agitation as if they are loyal to the poor people and working for the benefit of the poor people and show to the public that the CPI exist in TN. What a cunning man live in this State. D.Pandiyan knows very well that without lakes and ponds the rain water cannot be harvested. But what can he do - he has to run his party somehow or the other...even if it is a cheaper idea.

Pallavaram Hill

Pallavaram has a hill on which the central government has setup a research centre.The Hill is also a very popular shooting spot for Tamil Movies and Television dramas.It is believed that a relic of Prophet Mohammad is present on the hill and Muslims of the place take a religious walk to the top of the hill on the eve of ramzan.

Demographics

Pallavaram has 3 big lakes namely Pallavaram Big Lake, Kutchery Lake and Tamarai Kulam that served drinking water and water for irrigation for 100s of years. Now the 3 lakes are encroached by many miscreants with the support of local polititians and useless govt officials.

Whatever action taken by the govt [http://www.hindu.com/2008/08/17/stories/2008081757150100.htm Expert to study long-term solution to water shortage] will become useless, unless the encroachments are removed.There is a conspiracy between the local polititions(both Ruling and opponent) and the Pallavaram Municipality and Tambaram Tasildar office to stop evicting the encroachers.
