Toba Tek Singh is a city and tehsil of Toba Tek Singh District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It is located at 30°58'0N 72°28'60E [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/PK/4/Toba_Tek_Singh.html Location of Toba Tek Singh - Falling rain Genomics] ] .

History

During British rule Toba Tek Singh was a tehsil of Lyallpur District, the population of the this town in 1906 was 1,874 [ [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/reference/gazetteer/pager.html?objectid=DS405.1.I34_V23_412.gifToba Tek Singh - Imperial Gazetteer of India, v. 23, p. 406.] ]

Administration

As well as being a district capital, the city is also the administrative centre of Toba Tek Singh tehsil, one of the three subdivisions of the district - the tehsil itself is composed of 32 Union Councils [ [http://www.nrb.gov.pk/lg_election/union.asp?district=33&dn=Toba%20Tek%20Singh Tehsils & Unions in the District of Toba Tek Singh - Government of Pakistan] ] , three of which form the city of Toba Tek Singh.

In popular culture

Sadat Hasan Manto, an Urdu Novelist [ [http://www.personal.kent.edu/~rmuhamma/Personal/Urdu-Nasar/Manto/manto.html Personal.Kent.edu] ] wrote a short story entitled "Toba Tek Singh" which is a satire on Partition; in the story, an inmate in an asylum frets over the question of whether his home town Toba Tek Singh is now in India or Pakistan. It was adapted into a short movie of the same name [ [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486495/ IMDB.com] ] directed by Afia Nathaniel [ [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1398746/ IMDB.com] ] in 2005.
