Renfrewshire ,Scotland , 14 miles south-west ofGlasgow , which saw an explosion in its population during the middle of the 20th century due to the mass exodus of people from the Glasgow slums. At that time the town's economy relied on theRootes , laterChrysler then Peugeot Talbot, car plant and thePressed Steel Company , both of which ceased production in 1981, leaving mass unemployment in its wake. It is estimated that 13000 workers were left jobless as both direct and indirect consequences of this closure. Today, Linwood is considered an 'area of multiple deprivation' by theScottish Executive .
