Coral Harbour (
Inuktitut : Salliit, Syllabics: ᓴᓪᓖᑦ), is a smallInuit community that is located onSouthampton Island ,Kivalliq Region , in the Canadian territory ofNunavut . Its name is derived from thefossil izedcoral that can be found around the waters of the community and the name of the settlement inInuktitut is "Salliq" which means "flat".The only way to reach this community is by plane and the main transportation on the island itself (nearly the same size as
Switzerland ) is bysnowmobile and dog sleigh. Despite the harsh climate there is plentifulwildlife around the island. Among some of the species found there areWalrus es,Polar Bear s,Barren-ground Caribou ,Ringed Seal s,Gyr Falcon s, and (rarely)Peregrine Falcon s.As of the 2006 census the population was 769, an increase of 8.0% from the 2001 census.
