Omar Ayub Khan

Omar Ayub Khan (born January 26, 1970 to an influential Hindko speaking family of Hazara region, but originally of Pashtun Tareen (Tarin properly) descent, is a former Minister of State for Finance in Pakistan. He was elected as a Member of the National Assembly from constituency NA-19 Haripur as a candidate of PML (Q).^[1]

Education

Omar Ayub received his early education from Army Burn Hall College and high schooling from Aitchison College. He received his Bachelors and Masters in Business Administration from George Washington University, USA.

Career

Omar Ayub served in the cabinet of ex-Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and tried to bring about a turn around in the economic situation of the country. The Real GDP growth at the time was recorded at a healthy 6.2% for the fiscal year 2005-06 but subsequently, various problems such as heavy burden of taxation on the lower-income groups, low industrial output and low direct foreign investments, compounded by the situation resulting from Pakistan's involvement in the War against Terror and its attendant fallout, brought the country to the verge of bankruptcy.

As a result of this, and due to the increasing unpopularity of the Musharraf regime and its supporters in Pakistan, he lost his seat in the 2008 general elections to his main political opponent in the constituency, Raja Aamir Zaman, son of a former Chief Minister NWFP Raja Sikander Zaman by a sizeable number of votes.

Family

Omar Ayub Khan’s father , Gohar Ayub Khan, is a former Foreign Minister of Pakistan and his grandfather, General ('Field Marshal') Muhammed Ayub Khan, was a military dictator and later the President of Pakistan from 1958-1969.

He is the son-in-law of former federal minister Anwar Saifullah Khan and his wife is a grand-daughter of former Pakistani President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
