High school years
Whelilhan attended Santa Teresa High School and was a letterman in football, baseball and basketball. In football, as a senior, he passed for 1,314 yards and 11 touchdowns.
College years
Whelihan originally attended Oregon State University, sitting out freshman season as a redshirt. He transferred to the University of the Pacific playing both his sophomore and junior years. He ended his college career ranked third on the school's list for completions (300), attempts (591) and TDs (27).
NFL and XFL careers
Whelihan was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1995 in the sixth round and played for the team for four seasons, mostly as a backup quarterback. He threw 3,160 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns and threw 29 interceptions for a QB rating of 52.4, according to NFL.com. He signed with the Oakland Raiders and attended training camp in 2000. Whelihan played in the XFL in 2001 with the Memphis Maniax and the Chicago Enforcers.
Arena Football League career
With his National Football League career at a stalemate, and the XFL defunct, Whelihan took his talents to the Arena Football League. Since 2001, Whelihan has played for three different AFL teams: the Orlando Predators (2001-2002, 2004), the Indiana Firebirds (2003), and Las Vegas Gladiators (2005-2006).
Whelihan signed with the San Diego Riptide in 2005, but left for the Las Vegas Gladiators before he ever took a snap. In 2007, he served as the backup quarterback and holder for the ArenaBowl XXI champion San Jose SaberCats.
