Great Wall Youth Orchestra

The Great Wall Youth Orchestra is located in Oakland and performs Chinese music.

The Orchestra was formed to accommodate "graduates" of the Purple Bamboo Orchestra, and interested students from throughout the Bay Area are welcome to audition. Student members range from elementary to high school age and play pieces that reflect their high level of skill in playing their chosen Chinese musical instruments. The orchestra rehearses on Saturdays under tutelage of musicians, who are expert in the various instruments, and plays at many concerts throughout the year. All music played by the Orchestra is arranged by Mr. Pei Kun Xi.

Instructors

There are various instructors in the orchestra specializing in different types of instruments. Mr. He Cheng Liu is the instructor of the plucking section (yueqin, ruan, and zhongruan). Mr. Xian Lu is the Chinese flute instructor. Mr. Wei Wang is the hammered dulcimer/drum instructor of the orchestra, and Ms. Xiao-Feng Zhang is the Erhu instructor.
