(1996) |Shine is the name of Frida's second post-
ABBA solo album. Strengthened by the commercial success of 1982's "Something's Going On ", she was full of energy when entering the Studios de la Grand Armée, just a few steps from theChamps Elysées in the very heart ofParis . Recording began in February 1984. "Shine" reached the Top 10 on the album charts inSweden ,Norway andBelgium , and the Top 20 in theNetherlands .The album features songwriting contributions from musicians such as the late
Kirsty MacColl , Simon Climie - ofClimie Fisher fame, and Pete Glenister - since the early 1990sAlison Moyet 's co-writer and producer. The "Shine" project also saw Lyngstad making her debut as a composer on the album track "Don't Do It" and the single B-side "That's Tough", along with her son Hans Fredriksson. Another song, "I Don't Wanna Be Alone," was also written during the same period. Together with the backing band Rendez-Vous (two of its four members being none other than Hans Fredriksson andBenny Andersson 's son Peter Grönvall), a "demo" recording was produced but remains officially unreleased. Fredriksson's own band, FX, went on to record and release their own studio version. Further demo recordings were produced under the titles "My Dearest Friend", "Light of Love" and "Love Turns To Lies". The latter, written byChris Rea , was eventually recorded by and released on Rea's 1985 album, Shamrock Diaries. The track "Slowly" became the last song written by
Benny Andersson andBjörn Ulvaeus to be recorded by either of ABBA's female vocalists to date. A re-recording of the track, produced by Andersson and Ulvaeus themselves, was released by Swedish duo Gemini on their eponymous debut album in 1985.The "Shine" album has never been officially released in the
United States , but was issued inCanada by WEA.Phil Collins was to produce again, but as Genesis formed part of his other commitments, Big Country andU2 producerSteve Lillywhite took over his role. When compared to "Something's Going On", "Shine" was a modest success, and is Lyngstad's last English language studio album to date.
In 2005,
Universal Music issued a digitally remastered version of the album, including two bonus tracks. The album is also included in the "Frida Box Set".Track listing
