His appointment byPope Benedict XVI ended the fourteen-month vacancy in the diocese left byDonald Wuerl , who became the Archbishop of Washington in June 2006. Born in the working-class steel town of Ambridge, sixteen miles northwest of Pittsburgh along the
Ohio River , Zubik attended St. Stanislaus Parish, St. Stanislaus Grade School, St. Veronica High School (Ambridge), Pittsburgh's St. Paul Seminary, andDuquesne University before heading toBaltimore, Maryland 'sSaint Mary's Seminary and University, Roland Park , from which he was ordained in 1975. After serving in various parishes, and earning a Master's in Educational Administration from Duquesne, he became administrative secretary to then-BishopAnthony Bevilacqua in1987 , continuing in the post when then-Bishop Donald Wuerl arrived the following year. October 10 ,2003 , he was appointed to succeed the Most Reverend Robert Banks as Bishop of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay (Green Bay, Wisconsin ) as Bishop Banks had reached the retirement age of 75 and had resigned from his office. Bishop Zubik was then installed on December 12, the feast ofOur Lady of Guadalupe , of the same year.
