Jaime Laredo (born
June 7 ,1941 inCochabamba ,Bolivia ) is aviolinist and conductor. Currently the conductor and Music Director of theVermont Symphony Orchestra , he began his musical career when he was five years old. In 1948 he came toNorth America and took lessons fromAntonio DeGrass . He also studied withFrank Houser before moving toCleveland ,Ohio , to study underJosef Gingold in 1953. He studied withIvan Galamian at theCurtis Institute of Music until his graduation. Laredo is currently a professor at the renownedIndiana University Jacobs School of Music . He is also artistic advisor for theFort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra and will guest conduct the orchestra on April 18, 2009, in a program featuring his wife, Sharon Robinson.His
Carnegie Hall recital in October 1960 was much praised, and helped to launch his career. The next year, he played atRoyal Albert Hall in London. Afterwards, he has played with many major European and American orchestras, including theBoston Symphony Orchestra , theChicago Symphony Orchestra , theNew York Philharmonic , theCleveland Orchestra , thePhiladelphia Orchestra , theLondon Symphony Orchestra , theRoyal Philharmonic ,The Children's Orchestra Society and theSyracuse Symphony Orchestra .He also plays
viola , and has recordedpiano quartet s withIsaac Stern ,Yo-Yo Ma , andEmanuel Ax . In addition, he collaborated with pianistGlenn Gould . He is the violinist of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, whose cellist, Sharon Robinson, is his wife.
