Ruth Laredo

Ruth Laredo (nee Meckler, November 20, 1937, Detroit, Michigan - May 26, 2005, New York, New York) was an American classical pianist referred to as "America's First Lady of the Piano".A precocious starter, she was able to play God Bless America on her mother's piano at age two. Miss Meckler attended Detroit's Mumford High School (Class of 1956) and, under the tutelage of Rudolf Serkin, she graduated from Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music in 1960. She was married for some time to violinist Jaime Laredo.

Ruth Laredo was known for landmark recordings of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff. She was the first pianist to record all of Rachmaninoff's solo piano works. Ruth Laredo made recordings for the Connoisseur Society, CBS (now Sony) and Nonesuch labels.
