The primary industry in Swan Hills is oil and gas, although a hazardous waste disposal plant north of the town is also a local employer. At the height of Swan Hills’ original oil and gas boom, the town peaked at a population of 2,553 in 1979. It has since steadily declined by 900+ people over the past 28 years.
