Cambridgeshire county council is elected every four years by thefirst past the post system of election.Peterborough city council became aunitary authority in 1998, but it continues to form part of the county for ceremonial purposes. The council meets at Shire Hall inCambridge .The
East of England Regional Assembly is based atFlempton , nearBury St. Edmunds inSuffolk . The assembly was created as a voluntary regional chamber by theRegional Development Agencies Act 1998 . The first meeting was held in March 1999. Following criticism of the regional assemblies, it was proposed in July 2007 that they will be axed, losing their role by 2010.
