Bessette was born in White Plains, Westchester County, New York, thedaughter of William J. Bessette and his wife, Ann (
née Messina). Bessette had a twin sister, Lisa Ann. Raised inGreenwich, Connecticut , she attendedWilliam Smith College in New York, majoring in economics. She joined the Treasury staff of Morgan Stanley Group after graduation. Later, she received herMaster of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School of theUniversity of Pennsylvania . After Wharton, she returned toMorgan Stanley Dean Witter in Manhattan, specializing in Asian financial markets. She served as a vice president in seniorinvestment banking for nearly six years prior to her death. Lauren's mother, Ann Messina Freeman (she had divorced her husband several years earlier, and remarried to Dr. Richard Freeman, an
orthopedic surgeon ), received permission from the Manhattan court to become the administrator of her daughter's estate; she later successfully sued the Kennedy estate forwrongful death with a $15,000,000 out-of-court settlement. Her ashes were scattered at sea off the coast ofMartha's Vineyard , along with her brother-in-law JFK Jr and sister Carolyn, in a funeral service on the Navy'sUSS Briscoe (DD-977) , one of the ships sent to search for the missing trio.References
