Ebbe Curtis Hoff (born
August 12 ,1906 inRexford, Kansas diedFebruary 17 ,1985 inRichmond, Virginia ) was chairman of the Department of Neurological Science at theMedical College of Virginia , founding Dean, School of Graduate Studies [http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/gp/history.html] and founding director of the Virginia Division of Substance Abuse.He earned a bachelor's degree with honors at the
University of Washington in 1928 and aDoctor of Philosophy inphysiology fromSt. Catherine's College ,University of Oxford in 1932 where he studiedneurophysiology , writing his thesis on the theory of thesynapse underNobel Prize laureateSir Charles Sherrington . He worked as a physiology instructor atYale University in 1934 and later as a research assistant. He attendedmedical school (United Kingdom) earningBachelors of Medicine and Surgery andDoctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery degrees from Oxford and theLondon Hospital Medical College finishing in 1940.During
World War II , he served in theUnited States Navy as aflight surgeon and became a leading authority ondiving hazards and precautions , as well assubmarine andaviation medicine . He authored the first comprehensive text on compressed air diving and submarine medicine. He participated in developing the modifiedG-Suit design adopted for US Navy pilots. He took part in unsuccessful attempts to develop ashark repellent . He also served as a NavalAttaché at theAmerican Embassy, London . He left active military service with the rank ofCommander in 1946 but remained in theNaval Reserve .Dr. Hoff was a member of
