John W. "Jack" Buechner (born
June 4 ,1940 ) is apolitician from theU.S. state ofMissouri . He is a Republican. Buechner was raised inKirkwood, Missouri and attendedparochial schools . He graduated fromBenedictine College inAtchison, Kansas and graduated with an BA inpolitical science . He received his JD fromSaint Louis University School of Law . He was elected to theMissouri House of Representatives in 1972 and was re-elected five times. In 1984 he ran for theUS House of Representatives , challengingincumbent DemocratRobert A. Young . Buechner received 47.5% of the vote, losing narrowly to Young.In 1986, Buechner again challenged Young, and this time he was elected, winning 52.7% of the vote. Buechner was re-elected in 1988, but in 1990 he was defeated by Democrat
Joan Kelly Horn . Horn would be defeated after one term byJim Talent , later a U.S. Senator from Missouri. Mr. Buechner is known for his sardonic and self-deprecating sense of humor: in a live television interview after his 1984 loss, when asked his plans, Buechner joked that he was going to open a law firm in partnership with a prominent Democrat who had lost a statewide race that evening. He also was the only Congressman asked who was willing to giveDavid Letterman a tour of theUnited States Capitol for a video piece shown on "Late Night with David Letterman ".
