Carn Clonhugh ( _ga. Carn Clann Aodha) is a hill just north of Longford Town, Ireland, approximately halfway between Drumlish and Ballinalee in the parish of Killoe. It is the highest point in County Longford. The hill is 300 metres above sea level, and has a transmitter situated on the top which rises 100 metres above the peak of the hill. The hill is also known as Cairn Hill, and this is where the name of the transmitter derives (Cairn Hill Transmitter). (The original Irish form of the name refers to the ancient territory of "Clann Aodha" (Clanhugh) corresponding to the north-western part of County Longford).

Transmitter

The site is the home of the first UHF transmitter in Ireland opened by RTÉ in 1978; designed to fill an area of poor reception in the Irish midlands. The transmitter is the most powerful in Ireland, with an ERP of 800 kW. Initially just one channel (RTÉ 1) was carried, but now the country's four networks are available in UHF from this site. The transmitter has recently (2005) started to carry radio stations; however only RTÉ Radio 1 has begun broadcasting so far.
