Edward Daly (b.
December 5 1933 ,Belleek, County Fermanagh ,Northern Ireland ) was the Catholicbishop ofDerry from 1974 to 1993. He was a boarder atSt. Columb's College inDerry . He studied for the priesthood in theIrish College inRome .Before taking on the role of
bishop he was acurate in the parish ofSt. Eugene's Cathedral , which incorporated theBogside area of the city, where he experiencedthe Troubles inNorthern Ireland face-on.During his time in
Derry , he took part in theCivil Rights marches; he had first hand experience of theBattle of the Bogside in 1969, the early years ofthe Troubles ,internment , the events of Bloody Sunday 1972 andOperation Motorman . The image of Daly leading a group carrying a dying victim through the streets of Derry in search of aid whilst waving a white tissue on Bloody Sunday are famous the world over [http://www.theconnection.org/content/2003/07/18/0129bloody.jpg] . Daly also worked withRTÉ inDublin as a Religious Adviser. He has appeared on numerous television programmes and contributed to many television documentaries onreligious andNorthern Ireland affairs.Bishop Daly's Motto "Pasce Oves Meas" means 'Pastor my sheep'. The crest with the oak tree and the dove symbolises the wish for a new flowering of peace and strengthening of faith in the city of St. Colmcille and the See of
St. Eugene .Daly retired from his position as
bishop of Derry in October 1993, after suffering astroke , and took up a post as chaplain to Foyle Hospice. His autobiography, "Mister, Are you a Priest? ", documents his eventful life. He is also author of "Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled ", co-author of "" and has contributed an essay to "A History of the Diocese of Derry ".Daly is a supporter of
