Carl Vine (born 8 October 1954) is a prominent
Australia n classical,theatre ,film ,television and electroniccomposer .Career
Carl Vine was born in Perth,
Western Australia . He moved toSydney in 1975, where he is now based as afreelance composer. His association with theSydney Dance Company began that year when he joined as a rehearsalpianist . Two years later, under the guidance of the company's new artistic director,Graeme Murphy , Carl was commissioned to write music for '"Tip"', featuring amplifiedstring quartet ,orchestra and electronics. The premiere of the work inCanberra in 1977 marked the start of Vine's career as a noted composer forClassical Dance . In 1978, once again with Graeme Murphychoreograph ing, Vine scored "Poppy", the first all-Australian full-lengthballet .In 1980, Vine was appointed Lecturer in Electronic Music Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium, while also being the co-director and pianist of the specialist new music performing ensemble "Flederman". In 1984, he became Musical Director of the Australia/New Zealand Choreographic School (
Melbourne ) and resident composer at theSydney Conservatorium of Music .The last decade
In 2000, Vine was appointed Artistic Director at
Musica Viva Australia .The year 2004 saw his "Cello Concerto" premiered by
Steven Isserlis and theSydney Symphony , conducted byJiří Bělohlávek . The performance won Best Performance of an Australian Composition at the 2005 APRA/AMC Classical Music Awards.In 2005 he was awarded the 2005
Don Banks Music Award, the highest available accolade theAustralia Council for the Arts can confer on an artist. The award recognises artists who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to Australian music.As of 2006, Vine has seven
concerto s and six symphonies to his name. A seventh symphony has been planned, to be performed by theWest Australian Symphony Orchestra in 2008.Vine's work has taken him to
Germany ,Finland , theNetherlands , theUnited Kingdom , theUnited States ,Canada , andJapan . He enjoys a longstanding recording relationship with ABC. Renowned as a composer, he was asked to be a presenter of a documentary series on Australian television.Works (a selection)
