Coupled human-environment system

Coupled human-environment system

Much as space and time came to be linked a century ago, so today’s scientists are exploring a variety of ways in which Earth and its humans are linked. Many scientists[1] Coupled Human/Natural Systems now speak of "coupled human-environment systems," or "coupled human-natural systems."

In other words, scientists are beginning to understand how the natural objects and processes around us on Earth—plus human society -- are linked and always have been.

The profound connection between humans and the Earth is an active area of scientific study. For example, in 2007, it is a priority of the National Science Foundation to fund research on “coupled natural and human systems,” within its program called Biocomplexity in the Environment, which was later broken up into more specific subgroups, such as

  • Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems[2]
  • Materials Use: Science, Engineering, and Society (Deadline Date: February 7, 2007)
  • Environmental Genomics
