census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,536 people, 706 households, and 391 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,158.9 people per square mile (445.9/km²). There were 759 housing units at an average density of 572.7/sq mi (220.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.41% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population wereHispanic orLatino of any race.There were 706 households out of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.5% were non-families. 39.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 27.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

Conway (1902-1999)Chairman & co-founder of Thorp Finance Corporation a consumer loan firm started with $5,000 and 5 other partners in 1929 with operations based in Thorp Wisconsin.Thorp Finance grew into a multimillion dollar company with 137 loan offices in the Midwest. The company merged with ITT in 1965 and all operations were ceased in Thorp in the mid 1980's.
