United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 78.4square mile s (203.0km² ), of which, 76.6 square miles (198.5 km²) of it is land and 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²) of it (2.21%) is water.Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,579 people, 1,523 households, and 1,015 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 46.7 people per square mile (18.0/km²). There were 1,654 housing units at an average density of 21.6/sq mi (8.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.35% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.There were 1,523 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the town, the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,563, and the median income for a family was $33,446. Males had a median income of $28,448 versus $25,000 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $14,757. About 9.8% of families and 16.7% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 25.0% of those age 65 or over. Aroostook War . The annual State of Maine Potato Blossom Festival is held in the third week of July. The town has a venerable public library.
