Tinicum Township is a census-designated place and township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,353 at the 2000 census. Included within the township's boundaries are the communities of Lester and Essington. The township borders the city of Philadelphia to the southeast, and is separated from neighboring Ridley Township by Darby Creek.

I-95 runs through the township, as do Pennsylvania state routes PA 420 and PA 291.

The township is best known for its series of hotels and motels serving commuters using the Philadelphia International Airport, whose runways border Lester. As of 2006, Ramada Inn, Red Roof Inn, Holiday Inn, Motel 6, Econo Lodge, Quality Inn and Renaissance Hotels have branches in Tinicum Township, the latter three locations being in Lester.

The township's other notable aspect, the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, attracts visitors to the island year-round.

Tinicum Township has the distinction of being the site of the first recorded European settlement in Pennsylvania. Settled by the Swedes in 1643, it served as capital of the New Sweden Colony, under the rule of Governor Johan Printz.

Geography

Tinicum Township is located at coor dms|39|52|8|N|75|17|17|W|city (39.868962, -75.288273)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²), of which, 5.7 square miles (14.9 km²) of it is land and 3.0 square miles (7.7 km²) of it (34.10%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,353 people, 1,749 households, and 1,136 families residing in the township. The population density was 758.5 people per square mile (292.8/km²). There were 1,876 housing units at an average density of 326.9/sq mi (126.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.08% White, 0.80% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.26% of the population.

There were 1,749 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the township the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $42,910, and the median income for a family was $49,129. Males had a median income of $37,358 versus $27,134 for females. The per capita income for the township was $19,203. About 6.8% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 2.7% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Tinicum Township is part of the Interboro School District and is the district's only township.

Tinicum School and Interboro High School serve the township.
