Grand Union Canal branch

There is a proposal to create a new new branch of the Grand Union Canal between Milton Keynes and Bedford. The terrain is broadly favourable for most of the route, but Brogborough Hill creates a formidable obstacle. Options being considered include a tunnel under the hill or a Falkirk Wheel to go over it.

Another means of bypassing the terrestrial problems posed by Brogborough Hill has been added to the list of possibilities for the B-MK canal, suggested by designer Terry Fogarty of Alternatve Navigation Solutions Ltd.This simple, but effective design takes the form of an enclosed concrete tunnel, which is set at whatever angle is needed to traverse the linear distance from the high water level to the lower level. At the summit of the system the water is retained by a single traditional lock gate, and at the foot of the tunnel it is retained by a cylindrical rotating gate assembly. The operational progression is very simple; a boat enters the top lock which encompasses the top of the tunnel and tethered to a floating bollard which follows the countour of the inner walls of the tunnel; the top gate is then shut and water is then allowed to drain from the tunnel, thus lowering the bollard and the boat down to the lower level in one smooth movement.Once the levels have been equalised, the lower gate is then opened and the boat makes its way into the outgoing channel. This delightfully simple procedure is far easier to construct and mantain than any of the current suggested solutions, as it does not rely on a plethora of mechancial contrivances to move traffic up or down in levels; water is the only energy force necessary for its operation so it is relatively inexpensive to operate, and it obviates the need for users to negotiate their way through several operations to complete the evolution - it is seamless. For more informatrion on this concept please visit http://diagonallock.org .
