Joe Novak (born April 19, 1945) was a college football coach. Novak was the head coach at Northern Illinois University from December 1995 to December 2007, a span of twelve years. During the 2003 season, the NIU Football team defeated three BCS teams -- 13th-ranked Maryland, Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and Iowa State. NIU was ranked as high as #12 in the AP Poll, #14 in the USA Today Poll, and #10 in the BCS Poll. In the 2004 season, Novak led the Huskies to a 9-3 record, and their first bowl appearance in twenty-one years, winning the Silicon Valley Bowl over Troy University. After seven consecutive winning seasons from 2000 to 2006, NIU compiled a 53-30 record, ranking NIU with the 25th best record in the nation. Most of NIU's games have been televised since 2003, including all of their games (13) in 2006.

He previously had assistant stints at the University of Illinois, Miami University, and Indiana University. Joe Novak played college football in the Mid-American Conference at Miami University.

On November 26, 2007, Joe Novak announced that he will retire from coaching. "Winning is fragile," Novak said, "You've got to enjoy it when you're doing it....People have always said, 'You'll know when it's time,' and I believe that now is the time." His successor at Northern Illinois is Jerry Kill who is a good friend of Novak's.
