Castleton is a village on the River Esk in the county of North Yorkshire in England. It can be found about 15 miles south-east of Middlesbrough, in the North York Moors.
It is served by Castleton Moor railway station on the Esk Valley Line. Castleton has a local school and two public houses, "The Downe Arms" and "The Eskdale", as well as a Co-op, village shop, post office, petrol station, tea room and an art gallery. Castleton is a centre for walking, birdwatching, shooting and many other pursuits. It is said that Castleton was named after a castle built near the River Esk. Castleton has a cricket team which plays next to the river.
Castleton is studied briefly during the GCSE course for geography, due to the nearby quarry, to the south of Castleton. It is also studied during some A-Level Geography courses because of its location and status as a declining village community.
The Esk Valley Walk runs through the village.
