David McSavage (born David Andrews Jr.) is an Irish comedy writer and performer. He has performed at national and international comedy festivals[1] such as the Kilkenny Comedy Festival, and appeared on Irish television comedy programmes, including The Savage Eye. He is the son of an Irish politician, David Andrews, brother of former Fianna Fáil politician Barry Andrews and first cousin of Irish television and radio presenter Ryan Tubridy.
He is known for street performance on streets in Dublin city centre, and has been arrested for casual trading[2][3] on Grafton Street as he was selling copies of his DVD whilst performing in a minuscule posing pouch. His routine consists of improvised songs often predicated on speculation about the lives of those passing by, occasionally in an extremely offensive and insulting manner.
In 2008, McSavage devised and featured in Headwreckers, an episode of Channel 4's Comedy Lab show. In 2009, he piloted a comedy show on RTÉ Two TV channel called The Savage Eye (part of the Project Ha Ha series). McSavage went on to write for and act in a further five The Savage Eye programmes. The series was directed by Kieron Walsh and Damien O'Donnell. The series was commissioned and the first episode of the new season was broadcast on Monday 11/1/11. It and the second episode can be seen viewed on the RTÉ Player website. It is a six-part comedy sketch series which offers a satirical and often surreal examination of its subject matter.
It takes the form of a fake anthropological documentary as if made by British television or sometimes someone with Received Pronunciation from RTÉ Nationwide. Sketches are written and performed by a number of well known Irish actors and comedians, including David McSavage, Pat McDonnell, Eleanor Tiernan, Gerard McSorley, and John Colleary. Series contributory scriptwriter, Math teacher and stand up comedian Dermot McMurrow also performs.[4] Each show begins with a question on a particular topic, ranging from Alcohol, Religion to Sex, and The Arts,Tourism, and Emigration.
Each week The Savage Eye explores one subject in its entirety using vox pops from members of the public and interviews with academics who study irish society to inspire the comedy sketches and unflinching rants from the several recurring fictional characters. Sacred cows of Irish society such as Seamus Heaney, Joe Duffy, Pat Kenny, the Church, Consultant (medicine) General Practitioners, and the Garda are dissected. Written by: David McSavage With: Patrick McDonnell (actor), John Colleary, Dermot McMurrow, Aidan Bishop, Eleanor Tiernan, Johnny Candon, Damian Clark, Declan Rooney, James Goldsbury, Tasha K, Paul Tylak. Directed by Kieron J. Walsh & Damien O'Donnell
Produced by Katie Holly (One Hundred Mornings), the show's director of photography is Patrick Jordan (Croke Park Lives), and the production company is Blinder Films.[5]
