Joe Duffy was born in Mountjoy Square,
Dublin and brought up inBallyfermot . He went toTrinity College, Dublin in 1977 ( to study Social Work) and was elected President of Trinity College Students' Union in 1979, becoming President of theUnion of Students in Ireland four years later. Whilst in Trinity he shared a house in Aberdeen Street near thePhoenix Park withDick Spring , later leader of theIrish Labour Party .Fact|date=February 2007 He gave one of the readings at the Papal Mass atGalway Racetrack in 1979, along with BishopEamon Casey and Father Michael Cleary. In 1984 he was jailed for two weeks after student occupation of Eastern Health Board Offices. Duffy later became a Probation and Welfare Officer in the Department of Justice. Joe Duffy is married and has three children.In 1992, Duffy won a
Jacob's Award for his reports onRTÉ Radio 1 's "TheGay Byrne Show".Duffy is the current presenter of RTÉ Radio 1's "
Liveline ", which is broadcast on Mondays to Fridays between 13.45 and 15.00.He currently resides in
