Liberal Party Bangladesh

Liberal Party Bangladesh

The Liberal Party Bangladesh is a liberal political party in Bangladesh. It was established in August 1998 by a merger of various liberal, secular and centre-left political parties and trade unions. It is the Bangladeshi constituent of the Liberal International.

The party is led by Sheikh Mohiuddin Ahmed, a human rights rights activist and journalist who is well-known for his work in promoting democracy, gender equality and minority rights. The present caretaker administration of Bangladesh has forced much of the party's leadership into exile, but Sheikh Mohiuddin Ahmed, who currently lives in Ireland was brutally tortured and tried to kill by the past Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP government on 2004.

In addition to its main policy thinktank, the Institute of Liberal Democracy in Dhaka, it has various other affiliated organisations, such as the Liberal Commission for Women, Minorities and Human Rights. It has had limited electoral success, with no elected officials at any level of government, and is mired in controversy over allegations of funding from foreign governments.
