Regional profile
Vancouver Island is one of the most confusing areas in Canada on the political front. While traditionally a left-wing area with strong support (which remains today) for the New Democratic Party, the Conservatives (and the former Reform and Canadian Alliance parties) have dominated since 1993, mainly due to their populist policies. The exception is in the city of Victoria, which has recently been a reliable area for the Liberals in recent years, and they now hold two seats there since the defection of Keith Martin from the former Alliance party. However, support here for all parties is soft and this is an extremely volatile area. The NDP hope to make major gains, and so do the Green Party, who had some of their best results in Canada here. The Conservatives are going to be fighting to hold on to their current seats and the Liberals trying to hold on to the two seats they have now here. Anything from a Conservative gain of one seat to an NDP sweep is possible here.
